So what do you think? Do smart writers get read? Or am I doomed to obscurity if I continue down this literary path? Do I really write in a complicated manner? I always thought my sentences were fairly threadbare myself...
I'm so tired right now, and in the wake of this critique, I just don't have it in me to add to the novel tonight...
Clay, you have an enjoyable style of writing. I do think that sometimes your theme bites off more than your literary capacity can chew but such things are to be expected when starting out. In a few years, you'll have these kinks worked out. Do what you do, and screw vague advice like "dumb it down".

Back in the early 90s, I founbd out that USA Today writes most of its articles to a 6th to 8th grade reading level. When a friend of mine who worked for that god-awful rag told me this, a little part of my soul died.

When writing fiction for adults, don't dumb it down. Ever. When it is time to publish it, your agent and publisher will just have to market it to the right audience.
